Freelancer paid in USD — what actually reaches your MYR account?

Estimates, not verified quotes: the figures below are directional ranges pending checkout verification. Money2046 publishes only verified numbers as fact — see the [methodology](/methodology/) and the [Watch](/watch/).

If you bill in USD and live in Malaysia, the question isn’t the exchange rate you see on Google — it’s the rate you actually get, after every fee, spread and delay. The difference between routes is routinely 1–3% of every invoice (directional — verify per provider) — thousands of ringgit a year at typical freelancer volumes.

The three ways USD becomes MYR

  1. Client wires to your Malaysian bank (SWIFT). The advertised fee looks small. The hidden cost is the FX markup (typically 1.5–4% on the rate) plus correspondent bank fees that arrive as a surprise deduction.
  2. Wise-class specialist. Mid-market rate with a transparent fee. You see the exact MYR figure before you confirm. Typically the cheapest regulated option for freelancers.
  3. Stablecoin route (USDC/USDT). Fastest and often cheapest in fees, but you carry the execution: on-ramp, P2P spread, counterparty risk, and no consumer protection if something goes wrong.

The freelancer-specific trap

Most freelancers never compare — they use whatever their client suggests or whatever they set up once. And “the client’s bank charges the fee” almost always means you pay it twice: once in the wire fee, once in the rate.

Check your last invoice conversion. If you can’t see the exact rate and fee that applied, you don’t know what this costs you — and that’s the problem Money2046 exists to fix.

What to do this month

  1. Pull your last three USD→MYR conversions and calculate the effective rate you received.
  2. Compare against a Wise-class quote for the same amount (free to check).
  3. If you hold USDC/USDT already, price the P2P route too — but only with escrow and a verified counterparty.
